چکیده

The stability of proposed burning-plasma scenarios (for ITER-FEAT, IGNITOR and FIRE) with respect to shear-Alfvén modes possibly driven by fusionproduced alpha particles is investigated along with the effects of such modes on the transport and confinement properties of the alpha particles themselves. The results of numerical particle-in-cell model simulations show that one of the proposed scenarios (namely, the ITER-FEAT reversed-shear case) could be characterized by fast-growing energetic-particle modes, saturating via a convective displacement of the energetic ions. The consequent broadening pressure profile of the alpha particles and their additional diffusion due to scattering by the saturated electromagnetic fields show that the envisaged scenario cannot be considered consistent with the constraints imposed by nonlinear energetic-particle interactions with the Alfvén modes. The validity of the above results is discussed with reference to the approximations used in the model.

Effects of Alpha Particle Transport Driven by Alfvénic Instabilities on Proposed Burning Plasma Scenarios on ITER

The consistency of proposed burning plasma scenarios with Alfvénic instabilities driven by alpha particles is investigated. If the alpha particle pressure is above the threshold for resonant excitation of Energetic Particle driven Modes (EPMs), significant modification of the alpha particle pressure profile can take place. Model simulations are performed using the Hybrid MHD-Gyrokinetic Code (H...

Alfvénic Instabilities Driven by Alpha Particles in ITER Scenarios

Abstract. The stability of proposed ITER scenarios with respect to Alfvénic instabilities driven by fusionproduced alpha particles is investigated by hybrid MHD-particle simulations. Three cases are considered: the monotonic safety-factor scenario (SC2), the reversed-shear one (SC4) and a flat safety-factor profile “hybrid” scenario (SCH). Though all the cases are found unstable, growth rates a...

Alfvénic instabilities driven by fusion generated alpha particles in ITER scenarios

The stability of proposed ITER scenarios with respect to low-medium mode number Alfvénic instabilities driven by fusion-produced alpha particles is investigated by hybrid MHD-particle simulations. Three cases are considered: the monotonic safety factor scenario (SC2), the reversed-shear one (SC4) and a flat safety factor profile ‘hybrid’ scenario (SCH). All the three cases are found unstable, e...

Particle Transport and Electron Density Relaxation due to Stochastic Magnetic Fields in the MST Reversed Field Pinch

Particle transport and its effect on the plasma density distribution remains an important, unresolved issue in magnetic fusion plasmas [1]. Fluctuating magnetic fields can arise from global tearing instabilities that often underlie the sawtooth oscillation [2] and lead to plasma relaxation [3]. Furthermore, magnetic fluctuations are also generated by energetic particles associated with non-indu...

Interaction of fast particles and Alfvén modes in burning plasmas

In this paper we study the interaction of fast particles with Alfvénic instabilities in Tokamak plasmas, with reference to present-day experiments that exploit strong energetic particle heating (namely, JT-60U [1]) and the consistency of proposed ITER burning plasma scenarios [2]. Concerning JT-60U, two different types of bursting modes have been observed by MHD spectrography in auxiliary heate...
